Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
