Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
