RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels down to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," he commented. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
